With all of the running around Ranger and I do in the Holiday season, we haven’t found time in the past couple of years to decorate the house. But with all the improvements we’ve made to the house and the early planning I did this year to prepare, it was almost a painless process.

I designed and Sunsational Solutions cut this holiday door film for the front. I’ve had a blast year adding those special touches to our front and back door. And anyone who visits gets a kick out of seeing the designs.

Our relatives have been giving us ornaments over the years, some from our childhood, some new and we love having a tree with history. Ranger made a tree stand from a pecan tree log (thanks Pinterest!) from the backyard. We removed the bark, sanded it smooth and put a nice matte polycoat finish on it so it’s sure to last many years. I had struggled finding the perfect tree stand or skirt to fit our house (and something that could stand up to the dogs!) and this idea was perfect.

Stay tuned for more holiday decorating posts to come!

Last summer we purchased solar powered pathway lights for our walkway and garden beds. They’ve worked great so far, adding subtle ambience and keeping me from tripping around my dimly lit backyard. The only problem is, they come equipped with plastic spikes that are easily broken (I killed one with a car door last week) and can’t be replaced. After 3 of them breaking, I created this quick fix, one that’s lasted well and can take quite a beating!

Materials:

Drycleaner hanger (the thicker the better)

wire cutters

Instructions:

I’m sure at this point you don’t even need directions but here it goes… Clip the hanger in half so you’ve got yourself a v-shaped section of wire. Squeeze ends together and force into the ground a few inches where you want the light to live. Place light on top of the wire. TADA! Check out the photos below for more details…

I’ve been practicing my studio lighting techniques and found that the kids tend to make better models than Ranger. They sit still for cookies. He sits still for nothing…

Ranger likes them so much, he wants to have them all printed for the house. I have no idea where we have the wall space!

My good friend Helen and I finalized the Save the Date for her upcoming wedding in October using the underwater photos we took last fall. My first time taking underwater photos was better than I could have hoped but some of our favorite photos came out a little grainy. Rather than dismiss the photos as unusual, I post-processed the photos to have a vintage feel, with washed out colors and light leaks. I selected a embellished script font that exemplified the vintage romantic feeling I was going for. Here are the results:

The Bateman family was the winner of my November photo giveaway and today I had so much fun shooting in their home. The tree was up, the Christmas music was playing and the whole place smelled like cupcakes. With all the house remodeling we’ve been doing lately, this shoot finally got me in the holiday spirit. It was hard to put the camera away and go home today! And I couldn’t resist posting a quick preview tonight of their two perfect children. This one is my favorite of the day:

Meet Bella:

My parents adopted the cutest little Border Collie/Blue Heeler puppy. She’s smart, she’s sweet and all my pups love her as much as I do, though I can’t say the same for Sid, the cat. She was not a big fan of the camera, it took a while before she stopped squinting when I tried to take her photo. Perhaps someone played the old squirting camera trick on her

But I’ll have you know my Dad still calls me his favorite daughter. Though I think that’s only because she’s not completely house trained yet!
